Most people never get the chance to learn it. μ.democracy. exists to teach it.

Under construction. More soon.
For years we have worked with groups of every kind: activists, co-operatives, charities and teams. The same problem comes up every time. The group cannot act without someone taking over.
Well-meaning groups try to escape hierarchy, and then get lost in structurelessness. Without a shared way of making decisions, people feel powerless, and hidden hierarchies grow in the gaps.
A great deal of work has gone into the human side of decision making: facilitation, listening, consensus. There is almost no guidance on the final piece, writing the decision down.
That practice is powerful, and surprisingly hard until you have done it a few times. A group writing down a clear decision for the first time discovers that people held different assumptions, that nobody weighed the alternatives, and that nobody had said what success would look like. With practice and a simple structure, it becomes second nature.
This matters beyond any one meeting. In a crisis the call goes up to do something. Without the skills to act for ourselves, a call to act becomes a call for someone else to act: for someone with power to impose it. That is how authoritarianism takes hold.
We write simple, free guides any group can put into practice in minutes. Then we go into the room with real groups, watch where the practice works and where it breaks, and publish what we learn, including what did not work.
We get the website up and begin to make contact. We are looking for people interested in this journey, for new conversations, and for feedback on the guides and materials.
Field tests with around three groups: community groups, co-ops and campaigns with no written decision practice. Where we can, we work inside a meeting the group was having anyway: some training, then the real decision, with us facilitating and watching. We stay in touch through the quarter to see what changed. At the end, the groups meet each other at a gathering and tell each other what happened.
μ.democracy. has been designed to be a charity. We expect to be formally constituted in Q2 and to publish more of our materials online.
We are facilitators out to learn. We don't claim to be great experts. μ.democracy. is currently funded by The-Organization.com, our company.
